The word diabetes, which comes from Greek, means a siphon. A Greek physician named Aretus the Cappadocian (the second century A.D) named the state of the patients who had polyuria as diabainein. Thomas Willis (in 1675) adjoined “mellitus” to the word. The blood and urine of the people who have diabetes creates excessive glucose. The Latin meaning of Mel is honey and we know that glucose is also sweet in test like honey.
Diabetes mellitus means a group of metabolic diseases which are generated due to high blood sugar. It is generally known to us as diabetes. This is the state when the pancreas looses its ability to manufacture insulin which is considered to be a very essential hormone in human body. Insulin converts the sugar which remains in our daily meal into energy. Insufficient insulin results excessive glucose in our bloodstream and this unnecessary glucose causes diabetes.
